Awakening The True Self Poem by Mohammad Younus

Awakening The True Self

The key to the secret knowledge of true life
lies not in the external world,
nor in the accumulation of facts, but in the reclamation of our authentic essence.
It is only through this return to our core
that we can undo the layers of the false self,
the shadow we've inherited
from a world gone astray.
This false personality, shaped by— the chaos and confusion of modern life,
clings to us, disguising the luminous truth
of who we truly are.
Our task, then, is not to escape
or merge into the sea of illusion,
but to recover the essence
that has always resided within.

What we must cultivate
is not a vague notion of being,
but a profound, solar individuality— a radiant, self-aware consciousness.
What the Pythagoreans called
the making of the soul:
a transformative process
that shapes us from within,
like the alchemy of gold from raw ore.
We are not born with souls fully formed,
but as seeds that hold within them the potential to awaken,
to evolve, to become.

This awakening is not a passive surrender
to a collective identity,
nor is it a dissolution
into an impersonal universe.
It is a rebirth into the full,
unique individuality
of our true selves—
each one of us a spark of the divine, carrying a particular light
that is meant to shine
in its own way.
The seed of this essence is within us,
waiting for the moment
when we will, at last,
awaken from our deep sleep.
It is not a transformation
into some universal, formless self,
nor into a nebulous absence of self,
but a return to the purity of our own existence—
distinct, unique, radiant.

We must awaken,
each to our own truth,
and in doing so, align with
the eternal current of life
that flows through us,
guiding us back to the essence
from which we came.
Only then, as we reclaim our true essence,
can we walk freely in the world,
not as mere shadows,
but as beings of light,
fully realized in our individuality,
yet part of the vast,
interconnected web of existence. This is the path, the sacred journey,
where true life begins—
at the center of our own heart,
in the profound awareness
of who we are and
who we are becoming.
