Occasionally, I find I can relax,
even without alcohol; forget
six years of mental pain;
feel more or less alive again.
Having been through desperate times,
you appreciate each normal moment more,
and realise just how privileged you are
to live among the lucky few -
in relative wealth and freedom.
Happiness is harder to pursue.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Nicely done Robert! I definitely think worded this way it will be much easier for people to be able to relate it to their own lives and experiences. I could semi-relate it to my own past in the first version, now I feel like I can wholly relate to its meaning with this newly edited piece! Kudos!
I find this poem interesting. For I also have overcome a past. I'm having trouble with the wealth and freedom comment. I get the freedom and all that it entails. But the wealth is what I question. If you mean wealth in terms of being rich with blessings and family then I get it. I love the last line of this piece. It is true that happiness is harder to obtain but I've always felt that happiness has to start with self love. Being happy with who you are and what you are blessed with. So therefore, shouldn't maybe the wealth and freedom talked about be a big part of achieving that elusive happiness? Just something to ruminate over! Well done! You've made me stop and think!
