Be Grateful Poem by Sadaf Aslam

Be Grateful

Be grateful

"Be grateful" they say
Be grateful for the moon, she gives you all her light
It's 5 cents a sunbeam, and you get 3 for a dime
Be grateful.

"Be grateful" they say
Be grateful for the silence, all the songbirds are gone
Oh you like the forest soundscape? There's an app for your phone
Be grateful.

"Be grateful" they say
Be grateful for your shadows, they follow you around
You try and hide from the light, you always will be found
Be grateful.

"Be grateful" they say
Be grateful for your pain, it makes you who you are
Now take a pill and filter out the hideous ugly scar
Be grateful.

"Be grateful" they say
Be grateful for the crumbs, you can pick'em off the floor
But didn't you have some the other day?
And you still want some more?
Be grateful.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Luigi murder case prompted me to write this one. The case brought to the front the sentiments of the average person in America and Canada who is feeling like the system is rigged against them. And the anxieties of our times around the ever widening gap between the haves and have nots, the big tech, AI, oil and gas, big pharma and big agriculture. Who is looking for the average person?
