Sugar Poem by Sadaf Aslam

Sugar

Peanut brittle or pecan pie?
Pumpkin spiced latte chai
Or saffron flavored ras malai?
What will you have? What should I?

Butter cookies or snickerdoodles
Jalebis look like orange noodles
Apple crumble ‘n apple pie
Fresh and flaky apple strudels

Dunkin donuts or Krispy Kreams?
Strawberry shortcakes in my dreams
Mango sorbet, banana splits
Gelatos, kulfis and ice creams

Kitkat, Areo or Coffee Crisps
Chocolate covered potato chips
Coke ‘n Pepsi ‘n Orange Crush
Frosty, frizzy, sugary sips

I have had them all and many more
Campfire Reese's Pieces smores

But none sweeter than your lovely face
Your eyes, your lips, your curls, your waves

The sweet scent of a wild rose
Feeling the earth between my toes

A cup of tea and a crossword puzzle
Listening to an Urdu ghazal

Chatting with a dear old friend
Or a mystery thriller with the perfect end

Catching a snowflake on my tongue
So much beauty, so much fun

Someday I'll bake you a birthday cake
Someday I'll bring you a baklava plate

But I'll skip the sugar, just for today
I'll find my sweetness some other way

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My new year's resolution for 2025 is to cut down my sugar intake. Ras malai, jalebis and kulfis are Pakistani/Indian desserts, much loved in my family Ghazals are a form of Urdu romantic poetry. Excess sugar, especially the highly processed sugars are not only harmful to our health but have a very negative environmental impact. Especially those produced by the multinational corporations. Too often I turn to sugar when feeling bored or frustrated. There are so many healthier alternatives. We all have deep and complex relationships with food. No judgement. Just sharing my own experience
