Being 49, Reaching 50... Poem by Jasbir Chatterjee

Being 49, Reaching 50...

Rating: 5.0

I am 49,
Going on 50.

I ought to take it easy,
Just be content and let life flow
Like a stream moving slow.

But the whirlpool of life
Keeps me hurtling
Around; and I keep applying.

Recently an opening cropped up.
For me, it was unbelievably perfect.
Someone from their office called for a chat.

In the end the lady
Said, “Oh, I am sorry.
We did not look properly.

We are looking for people in their 30s and you are 49,
Going on 50.'

A few days later, another job opening cropped up.
For me, it was unbelievably perfect.
More leisure time, more money, better work environment...

One round
Led to another round.
In the final round, they said, “We will contact you if you qualify.”

That call has still not come, I doubt if it will come.
I think it has something to do with the wrinkles around my eyes,
The creases around my lips when I smile.

My being 49,
Going on 50.

But am not giving up; I refuse to take it easy,
Just be content and let life flow
Like a stream moving slow.

Because the whirlpool of life
Keeps me hurtling
Around; and I keep applying.

Thank you, Rajnishji, for your wonderful comments. I truly appreciate them. Sound of music is an all-time favorite movie and will always remain like this for generations to come.

The title of the poem reminds me of a movie The sound of music which was released exactly 50 years ago. I consider it as one of the greatest movies of all times. It is as robust today as it was at the time of its release.

This is indeed a very candid narration of the goings on which have the potential to destabilise a man. But with your gritty nature, you cannot be bogged down as you have aptly pointed out: But am not giving up; I refuse to take it easy, / Just be content and let life flow
