Better Apart Poem by Eunice Masumbuko

Better Apart

'I wanted to write you a letter, my love
To bring back the madness of our passion
And the bitterness of separation.'
I wanted you to rememberhow much you loved me,
And I, you.
i wanted you to see how much you meant to me,
How much i would have given up for you.
I wanted you to feel how i felt when we were together,
From smile to smile,
Touch to touch,
Kiss to kiss,
Breath to caught breath.
I wanted to bring back our days together in our secret haunt.

But i felt like i was chasing pavements.
Like i was attempting to catch a falling star.
Meeting you halfway
And yet, on both sides, it was me.

God knows i tried though i failed
To correct the fault in our stars.
No 'us' was written on the skyline,
Just a hell-deep void separating two hearts.
You and i were meant to be apart.
