Bonding Gaze Poem by Diana van den Berg

Bonding Gaze

It was the way he lifted his head...
tilting it to one side,
and looking at me
almost quizzically...
our eyes locking
for a moment and a day,
in a tentative bond,
before he scuttled away
along the top
of the concrete fence
his magnificent blue head
bright in the noonday sun.
