Brennbaum. (Translattion) . Poem by Michael Walker

Brennbaum. (Translattion) .

Les yeux limpides comme le ciel,
Le visage circulaire d'enfant,
La raideur des demi-guetres jusqu'au col
Qui ne se detendent jamais en la grace;

Les souvenirs lourds de Horeb, du Sinai et des quarante ans,
Ne se montraient que quand la lumiere du jour tombait
plat a travers son visage
De Brennenbaum 'L'Impeccable'.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Look up Poem Hunter/ Ezra Pound/ 41/250 for the English.
'Brennenbaum' is a cameo portrait of probably a Jewish businessman, who dresses impeccably 'from spats to collar', and never seems to relax or joke.
Brennenbaum remembers events in the Old Testament: Horeb, Mt. Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments, and the Jewish people's forty-year journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. There is genuine mystery about Brennenbaum, 'The Impeccable'. Justly a famous poem, even though it is short.
