Broken Shoulders Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Broken Shoulders

Once dependable and warm.
Receptive, protective, devoted and kind.
With an unselfish mind.
Now?
Not around.
Nor finding the time to be,
Easily found.

These broken shoulders,
Have been disrespected.
Neglected and cracked...
From the weight carried by others,
Dumping their burdens...
On backs loaded down with burdens.
To prove their concerns.
But shown no one else considers,
What it takes to perform...
Such giving acts.

To then be expected,
Rain checks to provide...
More time to devote,
After healing from a weakened...
Storm they alone,
Chase away to subside.

Then accused of being distant.
Unavailable to hear or listen,
To criticisms...
Of their thoughtlessness.
Unreliable,
They have been depicted.
Cold and heartless.
Lives restricted to their own,
Selfishness.

Broken Shoulders mend.
Never again,
To let themselves become fools.
And yet...
No one dares to mention,
Whose shoulders were there...
To care,
When they became sheltered...
By unrelenting wind and rain,
To be rescued off their knees.
