Cartcarrong Poem by Francis Duggan

Cartcarrong

Where so many species of water birds reside
In the tall reeds in the shallows they nest and from predators hide
Lake Cartcarrong at Winslow has strong links to the Peek Whurrong Race
At all times of year quite a beautiful place

An inspiration for artists and the writers of song, story and rhyme
It has been through changes over decades of time
Quite a different place before Europeans came
From the local Cartcarrong tribe it got it's indigenous name

To small boat owners and fishers it is widely known
Lake Cartcarrong at Winslow has a charm of it's own
Fifteen kilometers from Warrnambool the nearest big Town
In Summer the countryside around it often looking brown

For it's natural beauty it is widely known
Lake Cartcarrong at Winslow has a charm of it's own
A pleasant place to visit if you are driving that way
For to take in the beauty on a nice sunny day.
