Cat: Neither Here, Nor There Poem by Nika McGuin

Cat: Neither Here, Nor There

Rating: 5.0

Two jade green eyes
looking at me, they
follow me 'round the room
property of an inquisitive,
fluffy, four-legged creature -
part busy-body, part lazy bum

Cat...
you've got a mind all your own
so you never mind what you're told
still, I wonder why it is
your gemstone eyes always
look to me as if seeking approval

And why you sometimes
follow me like a puppy -
only to think better of it
slinking away to your birdwatching post

Cats, they are just wonderful. Here you've managed to capture their personality perfectly. A wonderful poem, Nika.

Hey, Nika! Your Poem of the Day introduced me to you, and now I’m reading your poems. In all of them I’ve read there’s a consistency I like, how your poems unfold in a natural conversational voice. I particularly like this one because of the subject. I’m not a cat person, but my wife is, and I’ve had years of observing them which have led to a bunch of poems. In this one you capture well the puzzling independent-depentent nature of these critters. -Glen Kappy
