Chewed Shoes Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Chewed Shoes

What a painful feeling
An unanticipated ache is unveiled
'You’re shoes have been chewed! '
Willfully a rush of rage is curtailed…

A favorite pair of ballet-like flats
Adorned with an adorable tie
Perfectly comfy…giving a hugging fit
Torturously mangled…I wanted to cry

Scolding the befuddled dog gave no solace
My monologue sadly was not mending
To the trash…the defiled pair was discarded
It was a tragedy…there was no pretending

On a solemn shoe shopping mission to replace…
Returning to the store where they were acquired
Searching… no success…they’re out of season
Realistic conclusion…the style has been retired

In the farthest shadows… at the rear of the store
A bold sign is boasting of clearance reductions
There may still a chance to renew with the same
Forsaken styles sport final slashed deductions

Searching high and low… a familiarity appears
A gleeful grab… joy is quickly doused…wrong size
Too good to be true…put them back on the metal rack
Resigned to failure…slowly turning…then I realize

Across the way another look alike…but smaller
A slight squeeze won’t matter…taking a closer look
The prized twosome is out of place…they’re my size!
A successful seeker… smiling as I get my checkbook

Driving home with gray clouds suddenly lifting
The sun is shining brightly…the gloominess departs
Arriving home in high spirits…unlocking the door
As my pooch greets me… I find forgiveness in my heart
