Childhood Friends - Poem by Flavio Pernarella

Childhood friends,
kindred souls,
transcending
race or color

In days past
we roamed the plains
forging a friendship
we vowed to honor

Then came a war
and blight of kinship
and blind hatred
took our races' heart

Your brethren captured me
and brought me to your father's feet
there is where
you played your part

I gazed upon your father
hoping he would know me
and see that I'm the friend
you vowed lasting friendship

But the blood of your brothers
spilt in senseless war
had marred his vision
had marred our kinship

High on a mountain
I was brought and tied
there I met, in your eyes
hopeful recognition

The grieving they felt
the sorrow they expressed
the knowing burden that comes
when friendship loses to tradition

Please,
take the space I'm offering you
Please,
ride the winds and let them bring you toward the freedom you are looking for
Please,
sing with me as a god between gods

Please,
Accept my dance as a gift of harmony and love

Forgive me,
For not being on your side

Forgive me
For a war I don't understand

Forgive me
For doing to you what I wouldn't want to do

People come back
There will be happier times
Times of peace and wisdom

Please,
Take the space I'm offering you
Please,
Ride the winds and let them bring you toward the freedom you are looking for
Please,
Sing with me as a god between gods
Please,
Accept my dance as a gift of harmony and love

Don't be afraid
People come back

There will be happier times
A time of peace and wisdom
A time of brotherhood

You sang to me
a song of farewell
a song of freedom
a song of forgiveness

You sang of the wind and of spaces
and the journey I would take
to another place
another beingness

Your song was a prayer
to your gods
to give you heart
to steady your hand

To believe it's right
that a man should die
if none other
by the duty of a friend

And as his spear
pierced my heart
I began my journey
between the now and never

Down the halls of time
as I now recall this tale
the truth is manifest at last
you are my friend - forever!
