Christmas Thief Poem by michael Smajda

Christmas Thief

Once upon a Christmas time
In our very own house,
There roamed about, quietly,
A smartly little mouse.

When all of us would be asleep,
Guess what this mouse would do?
He would brazenly, from our tree,
Remove an ornament or two.

I found this out late one night
Before retiring off to bed.
It was while resting on the sofa
When I first saw this mouse's head.

I watched him hugging the baseboard
And, for certain, now got to see
How he crawled along the branches
And carry his booty down the tree.

I followed his every moment
Till he scampered behind a wall.
And when I peeked into the hole,
This is what my one eye saw.

He, too, had a Christmas tree
But trimmed with items mostly mine.
And as he hung his recent steal,
I saw him sip what looked like wine.

Now, that I have seen the culprit
And found his hideaway, as well,
Near its entrance, I placed a trap
With luring cheese this mouse might smell.

When I returned the following morning
The cheese was gone.No mouse was near.
In their place, instead, was left this note,
"Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year."
