Closer Or Further Apart Poem by Mark Heathcote

Closer Or Further Apart

Closer or further apart
I cherish this inclement weather.
How we came inevitably together.
Hot and cold, then the lightning unfolds.
And claps of thunder roll.

And where ever we're at,
It's never quite the same.
Like a saucepan of milk at boiling point.
That if unchecked,
There'll be instantly nothing left.
But the burning spats of goodbye.

I'll spit in your eye;
I hope to God our paths never cross again.
And then much later—after a long,
Unbroken pause, a cry,
Please forgive me.

I'll love you till the day I die.
