Cock Of The Walk Poem by Juan Olivarez

Cock Of The Walk

Dawn is breaking in the east.
The sun is peaking through the fog.
Have to feed the chickens and all the rest,
Outside is the barking of my dog.

The cock of the walk is crowing too,
Raising his voice again, and again.
Flapping his wings, cock- a-doodle-doo,
He never fails in sunshine or rain.

He gathers his harem so rapidly,
Strutting all over scratching the ground.
Sticking his chest out, proud as can be,
Continuosly producing that monotonous sound.

Off to the high weeds he leads the way,
Pawing and scratching all over the lot.
His head to one side seeming to say,
Come here my beloveds, look what I got.

A handful of corn, I toss their way,
And they gobble it up lickity split.
And then they are off without delay,
Eager to be chomping at the bit.
