In Toronto, you may find lot of Indian restaurants run by Sardarjis. Their preparations may be quite spicy, but not very pungent. You would definitely like them. If you are, but, interested in really hot pickles, try looking out for an Andhra restaurant. Bon appetite.

In India we make pickles really hot. Either by red chillies of Andhra or the peppers from Kerala.
