Everyone in the palace of Mithila
reverred Sita, my elder sister
for her beauty and character
but love for me was no lesser.
Born to Maharaja Janaka
I was a proud child
sure that one day a king
will take my hand in marriage.
Father appointed the best gurus
to teach us everything under sun,
Sanskrit, the scriptures, governance
and martial arts and fencing as well.
I was trained by teachers many
to be a queen, a worthy consort
to any emperor of the world,
so that I get the best match.
With her august demeanour
knowledge vast and deep
and impeccable character
Sita needed no training.
She was called Maithili and Vaidehi
as the princess of Mithila and Videha
Janaki as daughter of King Janaka,
She had sobriquets many, I had none.
All those names fit to me as well,
I was Vaidehi, Maithili and Janaki.
but nobody addressed me thus, or
by any name other than Urmila.
