Conqueror's Scars Poem by Ololade Okunade

Conqueror's Scars

'Blessed are the hearts that can blend' they say
For they shall never be broken
I thought what's the essence if it's made of muscle
And a little flex I can't subject it to?
Little did I know this trip would cost me my life.

Yes, I had my doubts, but skillfully, you erased them
You made me believe there were no faults in my stars
The messenger of death who rode in on a golden unicorn
Bestowing me with gifts of lies wrapped in rainbows
My heart leapt liked gazelles in spring for you
But little did I know the Prince of darkness is also a gentleman.

I am now the prisoner who was once a privileged guest
I am now the patient who suffers for having a big heart
But this gift of life I won't let you take away
I won't be the foolish creature, who clings to her past
Cowers on her future and wastes her strength on bygone days.

Though, future sweethearts will have to suffer for your incompetencies
This bleeding heart of minds proves I'm forever grateful
For you've made me brave and with my newly found strength
I'll follow the light at the end of this tunnel
And if it ends up being a train, the scars won't prove I survived...

These scars would prove I conquered.
