The Wisher Poem by Ololade Okunade

The Wisher

The Wisher

I was Walking through the fields watching as my steps domesticated innocent shrubs
Wondering if the steps I took in the past left prints in the heart of men
Just a gentle nudge of the summer breeze was enough to send me on a visit to the days gone by
When like the shrubs and stubs at the mercy of my heel, I was sure I had company.
This is a past I don't want to visit
But here I am, the poor and hungry being gifted with food for thoughts
So I'm nothing more than the scent of the earth that changes at the suggestion of rain
Nothing more than the shutters of memories that swings wide at the hint of 'heartbreak'
I wish I had control, like that of a god;
I wish I were a god
That could create a monster that'll hate you as much as I loved you
Yet like me, not strong enough to hurt you.
So you could see for once that the reason the first person ever uttered the phrase 'love is blind'
Is because he predicted I'll fall for you.
Because against all odds
Here I am in February 15's cold grip wishing no harm befalls you
But If I were the god with control over wishes
I'll wish your safety away to the winds
Let the monsoons of Sahara do as they please while I get back to you in a minute
For you're not the only ill in the world I wish I can wish harm befalls

This is for the infants and children
I wish I can trap your innocence while I free your will
And make you see the lie in the tricky phrase
The higher you go, the cooler it becomes
For truly nature deprives you of choice over time
And the going gets tough,
So tough you wish the wheels and the bills away to the wind
You can still rest assured that I, the warder of your childhood memories
Would come from time to time to take you on a date.

This is for the bullies out there;
I wish I were the giver of life
Grant you in abundance like that of cats
So I tell you during the day to live your life to the fullest
Granting you trips to the wonders of heaven
While throwing you parties at the gates of hell
And at night, while you merry in your dreams
I'll retrieve eight and leave you with one
Then look back, and replace your alarm clock with a grenade.

This is for the soldiers and life savers;
I wish I were a blacksmith with the power to conjure rain
So much that I test my skills
By turning the guns and knives of your enemies to musical instruments
Such that they train no more but dance instead
To the sounds of the splatters on their helmets
As it rains on their parades.

This is for the broken hearted man;
I wish I can kidnap cupid on your behalf
And exchange the straps of your ex's handbags with its bow
Such that when she clutches it close to her bosom
It shoots her in the heart, over and over again
Not knowing i have changed its form
And taught it to induce pain.

This is for the broken hearted woman like you;
I wish I had the keys to the five senses
So that whenever you stir your coffee,
You won't be reminded of the smell of his gym clothes
Make your skin resistant to cold, so you yearn less for that hoodie
The only clothe your washing machine calls a stranger.
I wish I were Loki, the god of mischief
So from time to time,
Together, we go into new woman's make-up bag
Replace the bit*h's foundations with dusts from hell
So whenever he wakes up and sets his eyes on his her
We can always remind him of his final resting place

And back to you my Nemesis
Though I'd love to Invite your guts to a party after I open the gates of your anus and Introduce it to an 'all you can eat' buffet
These are nothing more than wishes for I wish you no harm
Thanks to you for I was blind, but now, I see
Now I see the gift of a mirror I've always had even in my blind days
While I whisper to my goals, I am the subject that is closer than It appears
And oh
What I see in its reflection is amazing
What I see in its reflection is confident
What I see in its reflection is beautiful...
Beautiful enough to make the devil believe
That God is on his side.
