The Enthusiast Poem by Ololade Okunade

The Enthusiast

I am hooked.
I devour poisons, in safe amounts
I jump off ledges on a quest for safe havens beyond
My poor judgements, I wrap in calculated risks
I appear to break things in the outside world,
In a bid to fix what's broken in me.

I trade seconds of momentary intoxication, for the wellness of my soul
I opt for the idea of oblivion, over trying my best to ride it out.
I seem to not have a hold, on preventing myself from wasting away.
Once a while I'm enthused about dropping the curtains to make way for my untimely cast.

Yes,
I know the whiplash will come, but I can't resist this highness
Maybe I'll be missed, but I think it's time to let go.
You call me suicidal, maybe I don't know better
You label me a junkie, maybe I deserve the name.

But just so you know;
Sometimes,
It's not the drug that makes the addict,
It's the need to escape reality.
