Dare You Poem by Kim Davies

Dare You

(Legend decrees: whoever shall enter her at midnight,
On this day, shall disappear forever.)

I NEVER REFUSE A DARE!

The gravestones cast eerie shadows in the moonlight
and bare black trees reach out with bony fingers.
Cold, dank mist wraps itself around me,
chilling me to the bone.
I shiver and thrust my hands deep
into my pockets, hunch my shoulders
against the freezing night air.

My mouth is dry.
I try to steady my breath,
calm the thumping in my chest.
I think of my friends, waiting
Outside the large iron gates.

In the distance, the crack of a twig.
I gasp for breath,
pulse racing, eyes wide,
struggling to see, yet
not wanting to see at all.

Somewhere, a blood-churning scream.
My heart pounding, banging
against my ribcage,
fear thudding in my ears,
icy fingers squeezing my throat
Can't breathe, CAN'T BREATHE!
it's time to get the hell out of here!

Outside the large iron gates,
The friends wait and wait.
The sun begins to rise.
They are still waiting......

I really like this one. I love the way the pace quickens in the third and fourth verses, making it a very tense, exciting read.

This is eerie. I like the ending wondering leaving the reader wondering what has happened. Hinted at left open which is always more frightening because the imagination is worse than reality. Excellent.
