Denouement Poem by Hannington Mumo

Denouement

What scales eerily winding up out of paucity
Do nabobs clutch at to rise to comfier ranks?
Which superior breed of a certainly favoured kind
Does greener pasturelands all silver-spooned find?

Such nabobs' sloshy virtue questionable looks.
Their bills of fare many unanswered queries
Pose beyond any accounting by honest books,
Beyond any tenable reconciling by straight pens.

What ladder arching onto splendid fortunes bright
Does the upstart's feet tread into an instant knight?
Who apportions all such overnight blessings grand
On the simple hearts that onto vaster pastures land?

Those all-easy-come fortunes' clandestine wings
Describe them as capriciously given to easy flight.
And the overnight blessings' heart-charming things
Certainly vanish as dew by patient sun-heat thawed.

He'll like the nabob's volatile fortunes soar someday
The virtuous toiler whose well-merited boosts delay.
