Destruction Poem by Gordon D Wilkinson

Destruction

You pluck the petals of my love, one by one
Discarding them without a thought
Only intent on my inner core
Somewhere for you to play
Drain dry
Eventually throwing away
Why do I let you do this?
Maybe my love is pure and free
No barriers to hold you back
Just simple love
Taking everything that’s thrown at it
Asking but without conviction that you reciprocate
Yet knowing you would rather play
Jumping from one carnival ride to another
Chasing the excitement
Never counting the cost
Uncaring of the broken petals
Instead grinding them into the earth as you leave
Worse than any bee that raids but leaves intact
Destruction be your name, woman the gender
Woman stop and think
Are we at opposite sides?
Other sides of lovers’ street
Walking in opposite directions
Merely pausing resting for a moment
As the clock ticks do, we continue away
Watching each other fade into the distance
Too worried about wagging tongues
Maybe frightened of the past
Unsure about another commitment
Ghosts that have never left
Drawing apart what could be
Stop, think and walk back
Cross into the middle of destiny
Take hold with both hands
Grasp everything
Never letting go
Hold life by the throat
Squeezing out every dropp of pleasure
Take courage to ban the past
Courage to walk into an unknown future
Just sure, that two can become one
Two halves becoming complete again
Melded together in passion
Mixing edges to a perfect joint
Unbreakable
Forever one
Yet I know you cannot do this
For you it is all a game
Go ahead continue plucking the petals
Drink them fry
For one day time will catch up with you
Draining away your beauty
Taking away your lure
Blossoms will pass you by
Not noticing what you have become
Just another empty husk
Mixed there with the ones you claimed
What will you do then?
Your security will be gone
Squandered by your appetite
Leaving you alone
A beggar without a choice
