Didn't You Understand? Poem by Mark Heathcote

Didn't You Understand?

Didn't you understand?
All I ever wanted was some casual time,
You know, boys in their prime.
Owlets need to hoot at the moon and leave the hay barn.
Cling to a bar stool and act the fool.
Didn't you understand that it wouldn't always be like this?
The orbs of your eyes beseech the stars to orbit,
But I am at this stage of my journey like a comet circling around.
Not yet ready to touch ground
Oh, darling, don't leave.
I didn't mean a thing.
