Alice Kriel

Disjointed

It’s some time after 3 am
I’m dead tired, but cannot sleep
Too busy mulling over old evils again
My thoughts always go to deep

Considering my own displeasing character
all the careless and witting knives
words I have aimed at those who matter
all those I have crushed, never considering their lives

No; self-loathing is too destructive tonight
and will lead to misery instead of learning
So I consider the words that sound right
and those that don’t, syllables of love and yearning

“Apartments” are meant to keep us apart
“Miss you like hell” is suitable only for Satan
“The right time” is nonexistent, it’s all in the heart
“Contact lenses”, “true-life movie”, “online dating”

“Easter” has nothing to do with the East
and “Christmas” has even less to do with Christ
The First and Third Worlds continue though the Second has ceased
Pornography is freedom of speech, prayer shows you’re biased

“Peace” means the government won’t, but you might still get shot
“God” is a term used to show disbelief or surprise
“Love” is one we use to show we like something a lot
or to indicate where lust lies

The world is asleep outside
and so should I probably be
but I want to create an outcry
I want them to feel, hear and see

But the earth moves
along its old way
and things seem likely
to stay the same.
