Divorce, A Safety Valve Poem by narayana aghalaya

Divorce, A Safety Valve

when divorce happens
with known couple, all the more
spirits do dampen

made for each other
they seemed like, for a few years
hidden, what simmered?

but the deed is done
future by themselves to cope
youth, to solve, are prone

parents too hold stake
when old, burden, can they bear?
much courage, it takes

fifty years ago
divorce unheard of, or rare
moms wouldn't let go

men were short-tempered
wives, by rule, were treated harsh
that didn't deter

sure, it was, unjust
mother's sacrifice, kids grew
with shame, no man blushed

now justice prevails
the partners have equal hold
much patience entails

effort to safeguard
takes two to tango, surely
kids they have to guard

bit of give and take
lots of free-flowing love, and
kids' help, bonds, to make

a safety valve
divorce, if total mismatch
for homes to get halved

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Nowadays divorce is not rare. The partners are free to decide whether their compatibility has broken down totally or can it be reconciled.Law is quite fair in this respect. But still it is painful, for the parents and kids if any.It should be used as rarely as possible. Unfortunately there is much abuse of women, still continuing, inspite of good education and economic power of the partners. This is surely a matter for concern.

You have dealt with a crucial issue of the times! Now with laws becoming more flexible and favorable, divorce becomes an easy 'game'. Earlier if it was resorted to in extreme cases of incompatibility, it is now taken as an easy way to thwart a relationship and every minor difference of opinion is carried on to a high 'voltage drama'. If couples are able to overlook minor lapses and make small adjustments, the sanctity of marriage could be retained!
