Dogs Kingdom -1 Poem by Freeyad Ibrahim

Dogs Kingdom -1

by Freeyad Ibrahim

In an organic food store
I wanted to buy canned sardines
which I adore
I extended my hand to a canned fish
to make home a delicious dish
And then pulled it down quickly
my heart began to beat harder
Unrhythmically
As my eyes saw an unbelievable price
36 euro, against my wish

At the same moment,
I saw a blue-eyed tall woman
holding a black-eyed white Dog,
Inside the store, not on the street
White like a sheep, but it didn't bleat
She reached out to a nearby can,
with the picture of a white Dog,

She did not withdraw her hand
even though the price was grand:
42 euro, for one can of meat.
The blonde lady pulled out the can
and tossed it into her basket,
between her meagre feet
Springing resembling a frog
Under the gaze of the Dog's eyes
which shone to see the box of meat
whose contents he used to eat.
I wondered before my blood froze,
with a great shame and a big boredom
Are Dogs more important than Humans?
In the European Dogs Kingdom?
