Don't Grow Up Too Soon

...........

My, oh my,
How you've grown.
You are nearly
As tall as me.
Pretty soon you'll stand
Strong as an oak,
And Grand as an
Elder tree.

Soon enough
You'll outgrow us,
You'll cast off
Your young'un things.
Discovering wonders
And mysteries
And more!
And cut your Momma's
Apron strings.

My goodness,
How you've grown so.
Imagine just how
Far you'll go!
You will climb as high
And climb as free
As your wisdom and wit
Will decree,
And ah,
I just can't wait to see
The grown-up
You turn out to be.

But where's the hurry?
Where's the rush?
You've shoes to tie.
You've teeth to brush.
So stick around!
It's nearly noon!
No need for growing up
Too soon!
You've still lots and lots
Of time.
You've far too many
Trees to climb.

There are fireflies,
And the open air.
There's Cotton Candy
At the Fair.
There are Watermelons
Of every size,
And oh, you're in
For a surprise
When, like us silly
Old folk say,
You awake
On Christmas day
To presents wrapped
In colored bows,
And Rudolph shining
Up his nose!
You've Summer time
And Cherry pies,
Apple blossoms,
Butterflies.
You've dreams to dream,
And stars to spy,
Don't let your
Childhood slip by.

Keep it close
And watch it go!
Oh, the wonders
It will show...
Just think of snow,
And count each flake!
And remember Grandma's
Christmas Cake!
She's famous in our
Little town,
And she's happiest
When you're around.

Go jump and run,
And sing and shout!
Have so much fun
It wears you out.
Fly a kite,
Or simply see
If you can climb
The fabled
Shamrock Tree!
Chase a wild
Rainbow high,
Or paint its magic
In the sky.
Why miss the
Shadows Autumn brings?
Or the sweet, sweet song
September sings?
When tomorrow casts
Our Harvest Moon.
Why must youth
Grow up so soon?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
"Children will not remember you for the
material things you provided but for the
feeling that you cherished them."

~Richard L. Evans

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

A truly wonderful poem about cherishing childhood and all the beauty to be had. I love this poem dear Richard it brought about memories of my own sons as children and who are now walking into their next stage of life as young adults. This is into my favourite list, thank you.
