Don't Tie Me Down Poem by Joanie Tarr

Don't Tie Me Down

Don't tie me down with emotion
But set me free from hurt and pain.
You pull me up and push me down
Over and Over, again and again
My blood, my breath, my life
Nothing more than a ruined stain.

Don't tie me down with promises
But set me free from temptation
You lift me up and step on me
I follow you with trepidation
My blood, my breath, my life
Exhausted, I collapse in perspiration

Don't tie me down with dreams
But set me free from heartbreak
You shift me left and yank me right
Up and down, my body is an ache
My blood, my breath, my life
One more, just one more breathe I'll take…

Just one more breathe. Nice work.

Thanks Edward. In case you were wondering, it actually has a double meaning... I was referring to both the dying of something inside when you realize how much control you've given to someone who keeps hurting you, as well the old One step at a time but implying that it is much more difficult to pick yourself up after an abusive relationship than people think. For the first while you are hanging in the balance, somewhere between giving up completely and finding the strength to fight back, by surviving. It's always wonderful when someone catches the one piece of my work that has the most meaning. Please feel free to let me know what you think of any of my work.
