Down With The Ship Poem by Michael John Cook

Down With The Ship

'Only the noble shall show no fear',
The cry from the deck was heard
'Only the brave shall victor here',
The Captain's inspiring words
As wooden splinters blocked the sun,
And all around the panic took hold
The battle still fought that could not be won,
By the few brave and foolish and bold
We few here to die to save those ashore,
Every man on deck equal at last
A deafening moan, loud as a lion's roar,
As down came the almighty mast
All of sudden my courage left me somehow,
As my feet seemed to give beneath me
No sword could save this poor lost soul now,
The waters were rising to greet thee
O' but an honourable death, down with ones ship,
Yet still no consolation did such a thought bring
The last visions I see as the stern takes it dip,
Those, that in a living mind, would be haunting
The gallant and brave battle at an end,
One final breath and goodnight
We shall never know if it were worth it dear friends,
As we sink further away from the light
