Driving Home In The Rain On A Bumpy Road Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

Driving Home In The Rain On A Bumpy Road

Someone honked the horn
For me to turn on my headlights,
While I try to adjust my speed
As the wipers go too fast and then too slow.
Must change the radio station, the music is pushing me
Down the road, some crazy song by 'Sting'
Has me driving to the beat.
Watch out for the bump says the next black print on
The orange flag..
I slowed down to 45,
Removed my hat to show my 'silver' hair so they
Would go around me, especially the one in the
Red Sport's car, tailgating I think.
Another bump!
Its raining harder and I am trying to remember
Where the on switch for the lights could be,
That one when pushed, warms the seat.
The road really is rough and I have had enough
But must go on in the rain where the road is still
Under repair...slowed down again, but
The flagman in the pea green neon vest waves me on.
Now I am doing 55 and some young singer is crooning,
'I want To Go Home'... and no one cares about the
Color of my hair in the rain on this bumpy road.
Ten miles more to go...
The crooner and I now sing a duet!
