Dust Devil Poem by Juan Olivarez

Dust Devil

Whirling through the desert sands,
Cutting straight across the wastes.
Prolonging it's short life while it can,
It tears along in desperate haste.

Picking up debris and dust,
As it makes it's way along,
Birds loose feathers from mighty gusts,
For being so small it can be so strong.

Off in the distance you can see,
The whirling dervish as it nears.
Batten the hatches cause it will be,
Speeding up as it changes gears.

And at the last moment, it's suddenly gone
Playing out it's life in the wink of an eye.
But soon another will come along,
Whirling and twisting from the ground to the sky.

6/11/10 29 palms ca.
