En Me Promenant Le Matin Dans La Cite.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

En Me Promenant Le Matin Dans La Cite.(Translation) .

un ami qui n'est jamais vu;
je feins d'etre decu
J'improvise a mon blues-harmonica

personne a dire ceci
parce que personne n'est mon amante.
Ce matin plus que jamais
Je suis decide a te trouver.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is one of Hunt's earlier poems, one that I taught in high schools. He is walking in a city-I think Wellington- in the morning, jobless. So he walks into the station sees the Limited pull in and pretends to be waiting for a friend who did not turn up. He pretends to be disappointed and improvises on his harmonica. He pretends these things so that passers-by will not wonder why he is there and not at work.
He buys a pad and ballpoint pen and pretends to write a letter, but has no one to write to, so he drinks the coffee and leaves. He has no current lover, so he is more intent than ever 'on finding you'.
The poem paints a picture of a man who is lonely in the morning city, with no one to correspond with, as he pretends to write a letter in the station; so e drinks the cup of coffee and leaves.
He walks 'down morning streets/ lightweight in the sun' and realizes he wants to find an old flame-'you'.
Students gave this authentic poem a good reception.
