Endangered Poem by Clemency Takawira

Endangered

Rating: 5.0

Elephants should envisage
Condomising
Female rhinos must ponder
Imbibing
Morning after pills
When sixteen elephants
Are murdered per day
A thousand rhinos per year
Contraception
Becomes a necessity
In stalling this calamity
The barrel of a riffle
Stifles their lives
From every direction
Death lies lurking
In every pool they drink from
They no longer die
Of natural causes
My kind rates jewellery
More precious
Than their lives
They make piano keys
Treat fever plauguing their kids
Elephants and rhinos' want of voice
Doesn't mean they don't grieve
Because we don't see their tears
Doesn't mean they don't bereave
Due to my people's rapacity
They are slowly gravitating
Towards extinction
