Evening Poem by Indika Thushara Gamage

Evening

Rating: 5.0

After dark
like thunder and rain
on the side of the grave
the drumming began

bursting tympanum
the bell lamented and wept
deaf and dumb and unconscious the stars
fell to the ground
from the side of the carpenter's shed that was
propped up
I heard clang
blind cranes began to fly

in twilight when she coming over balk
a scarecrow has outstretched straw hands
she fell into the mud
insulting bullets
tighting in the chest
elder brother also has come to the village
wearing bandages on the arm
although three months have passed
the eyes of darkness are burning
the jasmine is still in bloom
in the distant sky, the moon girl's loose gown
the hem sewing
are you elder sister?

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Part 3. " she fell into the mud insulting bullets "… the horror reverberates through the spine of the reader…The harrowing experiences come back to life, like skeletons dancing to the tune of the songs of death.

Part 2. " the jasmine is still in bloom in the distant sky, the moon girl's loose gown the hem sewing are you elder sister? " telling us a lot without words. The harsh realities of centuries-long ethnic conflict, its scalds and marks..

Powerful poem. Harsh and gnawing imagery " although three months have passed the eyes of darkness are burning "… the flow of words and images incise the readers' souls. A hole in their heart never fills.. Contd
