Ex-Armee.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

Ex-Armee.(Translation) .

Se perd dans la Guerre imprimee;
Dont les spectres escroques s'ecrient
Des trous obus du passe,
Nos actions etaient louees des mensonges
Nos os recompenses des maux.
Des voix de reve celles-ci-niant
Des lauriers rates jusqu'au bout.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poem Hunter/ S. Sassoon/ poems/ 54/166.
Siegfried Sassoon fought in the British army in World War One, knowing firsthand the hell of trench warfare against the Germans. He lasted the war, but did not endorse it. He speaks for the soldiers killed in action, who would now regret their fate if they could. The men's 'swindled ghosts are crying/ From shell-holes in the past' that their deeds were praised with lies, their bones rewarded with wrongs. The dream voices deny 'Dud laurels to the last'.
Sassoon identifies the rulers ordering the men to enlist to redeem mankind-a vague, untrue concept-as causing so many deaths.
