Exhausted Poem by Leslie Alexis

Exhausted

All that is left are the walls
For it did not give by cups,
But by buckets.
It gave to infinity, and it gave infinity.
The content of my heart
has been expended.
The length and breadth
has been drained.
Its elixir was given to dogs,
That ate it up – ravenously.
They sucked on its honey,
They slurped its wine,
They gnawed at its meat,
(My heart has been killed) .
They did it all - wastefully.
Its essence and form
Is now denatured
(Trust taken from it) .
It can no longer do its tasks.
As it is, so it does.
This part of me
can only do partially.
For all that is left
Are scraps - parts -
That cannot be pasted
(Can no longer love whole) .
My heart has been wasted
This is why
Her and I
Could no longer remain
(Because of abiding pain) , together.
