Fergus, The Little Terrier Poem by Warren Brown

Fergus, The Little Terrier

Fergus is a little dog
His coat is white as snow
But every time he lets off gas
Well! You wouldn't want to know!

Fergus is ferocious - in a smallish sort of way,
And the wombats tremble in their dens at night.
With an inexhaustible supply of piddle he marks the boundary out
He defines who goes where and Lord help them what get caught!

Fergus is a regal Scottish name,
A regal type of Scottish hound is he,
Smallish though, but fast, his chassis close upon the ground,
The terror of all small game and chooks, magpies notwithstanding.

Fergus bears his name with pride and struts around the Hall
i.e. Dutton Cottage, and the wildwoods just outside,
And keeps the unseen demons out with barking and repute,
Burglars, well, they're not game to call lest he rip ‘em all apart!

Fergus was behind the door
When manners were handed out
His displays are bad, he doesn't care at all
It's a good thing he's only small!

Fergus likes to get outside
He does it with some skill
Over the fence with one big leap
And back inside at will!

Munyah went to feed him
He wasn't to be found
She called him, com'on Fergus!
He scaled the fence with one unbroken bound!

Now I don't want you to think that Fergus is a whimp
He just doesn't know his size
Bigger hounds he won't abide
On them, he tries to put the crimp!

And so, by what I've said
You will have got the message
Fergus is a lion at heart
Even if he is undersized!
