Finding My Spine Poem by Samantha Stough

Finding My Spine

Just wait and see,
I’ll find my spine eventually
Even though you threw it down submission’s bottomless well
It’ll be one hell of a plunge, but then I’ll have a pretty little story to tell
Really look at me for once, for all you ever do is stare
My body a soft, hollow shell that used to carry burdens I can no longer bare
Your lips are just a swollen orifice for words that don’t mean a cent
Your excuses will no longer make up for your inability to repent
No apology will keep me from seeking what’s real
You say it comes from the heart, but how could it when it’s just a shard of steel
All bets are off, and I’m back from the grave
I’ll take back every damn I ever gave
Just wait and see,
Better yet…walk away in the opposite direction and stay away from me
