from "Curious Creatures"

Hefted to her chest
he sprawls—struggles—against her.
She thinks she's helping.

thank you, tony, for the positive comments and for taking the time to make them. seeing my granddaughter do this yesterday brought a smile to my heart and face- which is why i wrote the poem. if you're not familiar with the haiku poet issa, i highly recommend him (particularly as he's translated in the anthology the essential haiku. issa has a tenderness towards living things i think you'll enjoy. also, i commented on your poem and hope you got it. i sent it but didn't see it posted, but maybe i'm being impatient. i liked it- how many senses are called to the imagination. i made one suggestion since most of the poem is in the present tense- that is that you begin it with i sit instead of i sat. also, your poem reminds me of one by dylan thomas which i think you'll like, if you don't know it already. it begins, in my craft or sullen art. mercy and peace be yours in abundance! -glen kappy
