Flashback Poem by Jon M. Nelson

Flashback

Sometimes when I hear a loud banging sound,
I'm tempted to fall and lay on the ground.
It reminds me of an enemy shooting a round,
But I look and there's no danger to be found.

I wake up from nightmares in the dead of night,
Because sometimes I think I'm still in the fight.
I can easily be reminded of the horrible sight,
By just a simple shadow in the moonlight.

The memories seem to keep haunting my mind,
And they take me back like I had hit rewind.
Hopefully someday this peace I'll be able to find,
And then I can leave the horrors behind.

So many things can seem to take me back,
And I always feel like I'm under attack.
Sometimes my sanity falls through the crack,
Every now and then when I have a flashback.
