Foresight; Hindsight Poem by Sonny Rainshine

Foresight; Hindsight

On her deathbed,
Caroline was asked
by her daughter
if there was anything
she regretted
not having done
in her lifetime.

After hesitating,
Caroline said:
“I wish that I had
looked at the rain.”

“Why mom, you’ve looked
at the rain countless times;
we live in Seattle.”

“But I never saw it.
Artists try to suggest it
with those little slanted lines
or by reflecting puddles,
but that is not quite right.

“I was always trying
to get out of it,
so I never looked
at it properly.
I regret the beautiful things
that I looked at,
but never saw.
I regret
getting out of it.”
