Freedom Imprisoned Poem by Blessing Adebayo

Freedom Imprisoned

Who do I blame?
For incessant pain afflicted on us,
For hardship bestowed on us,
We live all fine,
They call it human nature.

Who do I blame?
When we adapt to pain and hunger,
Because even if we cry on streets,
We are beggars.
Even in our fathers land.

Who do I blame?
For the jobs that took lifetime to acquire,
Despite the clamour that education is required,
For the Useless experience not acquired been required,
Before I am hired in my fathers land.

Who do I blame?
For the darkness that covered my face,
Right from the day I came from the darkest place,
For  the maps on my streets,
Telling me never to buy a car,
I see this as 'ìkà' our Yòrùbá word for wickedness.

Who do I blame?
For the sleep I can't sleep,
For the breath I can't take,
Because my eyes are to guide,
And my breath is paid for either with life or survival.

Who do I blame?
For the cries from the graves,
From the spirit so young but tamed.
For the life's with future-cut short,
For the bleeding of our sons and daughters.

Maybe I was wrong?
Maybe freedom is pain,
Maybe freedom is hunger,
Maybe freedom is darkness,
Maybe freedom is bleeding.

Maybe at the end,
There is truly freedom,
Because right now,
Our freedom is imprisoned.
