God Does Not Seek The Hollow Weight Of Ritual Poem by Mohammad Younus

God Does Not Seek The Hollow Weight Of Ritual

God does not seek the hollow weight of ritual,
Nor the mechanical motions of practice,
But the quiet revolutions of the heart—
Where pure devotion blooms,
And love spills over into every action.

Rituals are but vessels—
Fragile boats on the river of intention,
Meant to ferry the soul toward
The shores of remembrance,
Of divine decree, love, peace, and compassion.
Yet if they drift without purpose,
Failing to awaken the seeds of fitrah,
They crumble like dust in the wind—
Empty gestures, lost to time.

The essence of worship lies not in form,
Not in the telling and counting of beads,
But in the light it casts upon the world—
A reflection of divine mercy
Woven through the fabric of daily life.

On the Day of Judgment,
The first inquiry will echo softly—
Not of prostrations alone,
But of Salah in its fullest bloom:
Did your prayer mend the soul's fractures?
Did it soften the heart's hard edges?
Did it ignite the fire of justice within you?

The Qur'an reveals the weightier question:
What did you craft with the breath of life?
A tapestry of service,
Threads of generosity entwined with truth—
Or a scattered existence,
Frayed by neglect and fleeting desires?

Be not like hypocrites,
Who veil falsehood with hollow rites,
Performing rituals yet deaf to the call
Of divine obedience.
See how Allah warns in unambiguous words:

'Have you seen the one who denies the Judgment?
That is the one who pushes away the orphan,
And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
So woe to those who pray—
Those heedless of their prayer—
Those who make a show of their deeds,
Yet refuse to give even small kindnesses.'

Life's worth will not be measured
By the telling and counting of beads,
But by the imprint they leave behind—
Did they cradle the weak?
Did they shelter the oppressed?
Did they, like rain,
Nourish the barren fields of the world?

Rituals are not the end,
But signposts along the way—
Guiding the traveler toward God's dwelling,
Where peace, love, and justice reside.
Beyond the ritual lies the heart
Of divine expectation.
