God of Intellect
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
Some years ago, I had a huge shock
For through an unidentifiable source,
I found that my supervisor from graduate school at U of Toronto
Was a fallen idol with feet of clay;

Looking out for myself and my friends,
I kept it as a secret
And as the years have advanced and my son will
Be the Class of 2020 in October with a double degree
In Philosophy and Political Science,
I seek the God of Intellect's favourable sentiments and support;

Of course, I do seek the God of Intellect's support for
My own comeback in my career in engineering
And pray to the non-threatening Hindu Gods
But look for inspiration in western civilization;

There is Auguste Rodin's The Thinker
But seriously speaking, having a nude sculpture in your foyer
When I don't have the blessing of an earning career as of yet
Unless I count two years of my son's childhood,
Calls for comment from loved and liked ones;

I seek to have the God of Intellect in our living room
As a painting and I had thought that I would make this a likeness of my son
For there is always wishful thinking
And have a white light dispersing into a spectrum of seven colours on the graduation cap;

However, Toni Morrison has likened a complete sexual orgasm to a rainbow
And interpreting this for I know what it feels like,
I say that the beauty of the rainbow is the governing aspect of the orgasm
And it would be either poetic justice to stick to my original plan or plebeian
For there are aspects of the heart and the sexual organs
That must not be confused with the joy that the mind gives
For the mind and brain must think
And not have the luxury of indulging in sexual orgasms
Mind you, the mind also plays a role in the latter;

What would a male God of Intellect be like
To me, an engineer-writer-poet-artist,
For I am making a wooden Temple of Parthenon
And I learnt that the Temple of Parthenon worships Athena, the Goddess of Intellect;

I want my son to be given the gift of intellect
And success with earnings from this God of Intellect
And surely, he must have Aristotle's genius for Aristotle's
Syllogistic logic is imprinted in today's computer oriented world;

Aristotle's Laws of the Human Mind
Reads as the conversion of a thought
To an endeavour or a theory or an accomplishment
And lofty and loving thoughts are beautiful
And I shall make a floral bouquet as a fabric art piece
Or a flower arrangement.
