Gone Fishing. Poem by Michael Walker

Gone Fishing.

Rating: 5.0

There were plenty of chances for fishing
At the seaside village when I was a child.
I would fish off the swing bridge
Hook, line and sinker into the river.

Fishing was popular so I was not alone
On the bridge catching mainly herrings
Which would take any bait off the hook
And you could keep all fish then, by the book.

Nowadays I have other fish to fry; I want more action
Than waiting for a bite. I found it on the treadmill
Oflife studying books, writing a diary, out on the roads.
When I am gone from the playground, they will not write,
'Gone fishing'.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I loved fishing as a child in the river and at the beach near the village in New Zealand where I grew up. Those memories never fade. I gave up fishing while still young, I think because I got involved with sports teams-cricket, rugby and athletics- at high school and that took all my spare time.
I have read in death notices in the newspaper that the man has 'gone fishing'. He would have liked fishing, which became a metaphor for his absence. I have seen 'Gone fishing' also on shop windows, when the shopkeeper is out for a while. That is another figurative use of the phrase.
Hook, line and sinker= it can mean figuratively to fall totally for something not in your best interests. Other fish to fry=figuratively, other things to do.

Apart from entertaining the readers with your lovely notes, you have taken them along your fishing expeditions of childhood and other pursuits in the later years. We don't expect that notice 'Gone Fishing' while you keep fishing in different trajectories. Thanks, Michael. This is profound.

For fishing you have got plenty of chances and you have gained experiences. Keeping a record of fishes and their names and attitudes in a book is amazing....10
