Got It Going To Stay On Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Got It Going To Stay On

You say,
I've got it going on?

"Yes. I did."

Well...
I once had my moments,
Of being turned off.
Closed and shut down.
But,
When I was taught...
To welcome and accept critique.
And not to think I knew it all.
I began experiencing,
More about life than I thought.
And there I was.
Challenged by an agonizing task.
Knowing no more judgements,
I could find them to pass.
With a learning something new.
And...
How about you.
You also have it going on too!

"Well...
My experience was definitely unique."

How so?

"It took me awhile to see the light.

Why is that?

"Ignorance.
My own to finally admit it.
I kept defending it as if a necessity.
Blaming to accuse and fault everybody.
For mistakes I made.
And feeling good about it too."

I heard that.
Welcome to the club.

"Then...
The strangest thing happened to me."

Really. And, what was that?

"Some may call it personal reasoning.
But I was attacked too personally.
And...
By my own voice saying,
-You must think I'm stupid.
We wouldn't be sitting up here in the dark.
If you had paid the electricity bill.-
To then begin to curse at me."

No!
You joking?

"I wish I was.
And that was the last time,
I attempted to convince myself...
I was right and everybody else was wrong."

So...
You don't talk to yourself anymore?

"Are you kidding?
Do you? "

Not as much as I use to.

"That's how I noticed,
You got it going on."

Hopefully to stay that way.
However...
These days,
Personal reasoning...
Maybe better not to abandon it.

"I feel you.
Although,
That kind of criticism...
Got too personal."
