Granddad Poem by Roisin McNally

Granddad

When I think of You
I think of the memories I have.
How you used to visit
With bags of sweets
For you're granddaughters.

You used to sit in the porch
And would scare me when
You set paper on fire
And threw it on the ground.
I was scared but you were laughing.

When you stayed with us in the summer
You would sit on you're chair for hours-
Sleeping, reading, taking my
Notebook and writing out
The Greek alphabet.
I still have that paper.

When you're son was getting married
I went into you're room and
You asked my sister to take
A photo of us before we left.
You and I were smiling.

You died two months after that
Photograph was taken.
I have never seen a photo
Of us together before that.
It was as if you knew.

When I think of you. I want
To cry because I never got
To say goodbye to you
I never got to say '
I love you Granddad' or hug
You one last time.

So now I say it in hopes you
Will somehow hear me:
I love you Granddad.
Goodbye.
