Hagfish Poem by Ima Ryma

Hagfish

I am a hagfish studied by
Humans who find me quite unique.
On the sea bottom I do lie.
Dead carcasses I mainly seek.
Eel like, I tie myself in knots,
And wiggle in Houdini style.
Once inside, I devour lots,
Making the gory trip worthwhile.
A live one comes my way sometime.
I use my best defense/offense,
And cover the live one in slime.
I don't know why - it just makes sense.

The more by humans I be checked,
The more I get human respect.
